Description
Matjesbrötchen is a traditional Northern German fish sandwich featuring mildly pickled Matjes herring served in a fresh bread roll with onions, pickles, and a creamy sauce. This beloved street food is a staple at fish markets and seaside towns, offering a delicious mix of salty, tangy, and creamy flavors in every bite.
Ingredients
• 4 fresh bread rolls (Brötchen)
• 4 Matjes herring fillets
• 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
• 4-6 small pickles, sliced
• 4 tbsp crème fraîche or mayonnaise
• 1 tsp mustard
• 1 tsp lemon juice
• 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped
• Black pepper, to taste
• Lettuce leaves (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, mix crème fraîche (or mayonnaise), mustard, lemon juice, and chopped dill. Season with black pepper.
2. Assemble the Sandwich: Slice the bread rolls in half. Spread the sauce on the bottom half of each roll.
3. Add the Herring & Toppings: Place a Matjes herring fillet on top of the sauce, then layer with red onion slices and pickles.
4. Optional Additions: Add lettuce for extra crunch if desired.
5. Serve & Enjoy: Close the sandwich with the top half of the bread roll and serve immediately.
Notes
• Authentic Matjes herring is milder and less salty than regular pickled herring.
• For a healthier twist, use Greek yogurt instead of crème fraîche.
• Pairs well with potato salad, fries, or a cold beer.
