Description

A Jalousie is a beautiful French-style puff pastry filled with delicious ingredients and baked to golden perfection. This Chicken and Cheese Jalousie combines tender chicken, gooey melted cheese, and savory seasonings, all encased in flaky puff pastry. It’s perfect for brunch, lunch, or as an impressive appetizer.


Ingredients

• 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

• 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded or diced

• ½ cup shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese

• ¼ cup cream cheese, softened

• 1 small onion, finely chopped

• 1 clove garlic, minced

• ½ tsp dried thyme

• ½ tsp black pepper

• ¼ tsp salt

• 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

• 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

• 1 tbsp milk (for egg wash)

• Sesame seeds or poppy seeds (optional, for topping)


Instructions

1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Prepare Filling: In a pan over medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add shredded chicken, thyme, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and let cool.

3. Mix Cheese: In a bowl, combine the chicken mixture with cream cheese and shredded cheddar or Gruyère. Mix well.

4. Prepare Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface. Cut it into a rectangle and place it on the baking sheet.

5. Fill & Fold: Spread the chicken mixture onto one half of the pastry, leaving a ½-inch border. Fold the other half over the filling. Seal the edges by pressing with a fork.

6. Create Slits: Cut diagonal slits on the top layer of the pastry to create the signature jalousie look. Brush with egg wash (egg beaten with milk) and sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired.

7. Bake: Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and flaky.

8. Cool & Serve: Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

• For a richer flavor, add ¼ cup sautéed mushrooms or sun-dried tomatoes.

• Substitute chicken with turkey or ham for variety.
